Microdermabrasion

Do you want to give your skin a more radiant and refreshed appearance with no downtime? Ask Dr. Bedrossian and his staff about particle-free treatments, using advanced diamond-tipped wands.

What Is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a safe, nonchemical, cosmetic procedure to modestly reduce the appearance of superficial fine lines of the skin. Unlike more invasive treatments such as a chemical peel or dermabrasion, microdermabrasion can be completed in under an hour, For this reason, it is sometimes referred to as the "lunchtime peel."

Candidates For Microdermabrasion

This procedure removes the superficial outer layers of dry skin, the stratum cornium, revealing the younger, healthier skin. It does not reach the deeper level of the skin, so it is unlikely to change deep wrinkles. After repeated use, a subtle improvement is seen in the shallow wrinkles, such as those at the corner of the eyes. The procedure does cause the skin to produce more collagen, which can slow the development of more pronounced lines. It is often done to enhance the effect of topical antiwrinkle medications and chemical peels by allowing them to more easily penetrate the skin.

Prior to treatment tell Dr Bedrossian if you have previously had cosmetic surgery or are prone to scarring, which may increase the potential for side effects. Also, if you have taken the medication isotretinoin, he may advise that you wait six months before beginning a microdermabrasion procedure.

The Microdermabrasion Procedure

To perform the microdermabrasion procedure, Dr. Bedrossian uses a special diamond-studded wand that loosens the dead superficial skin cells of the outer most layer of the skin, the stratum cornium of the epidermis. The tool also has a suction component that vacuums up the loose skin cells. For best results, this procedure should be repeated every week or every other week.
