Recovering from Cataract Surgery
Cataracts can become debilitating if treatment is not obtained to remove the clouded lens of one or both eyes. While cataracts can be a serious problem that severely affects vision, the simple removal procedure offers significant benefits to adults of all ages. Once the clouded lens is replaced with an appropriate intraocular lens, patients can expect their clear vision to be restored.
As advantageous as cataract removal surgery is, we understand the apprehension any person may feel before undergoing this outpatient procedure. In particular, patients as about pain during their treatment. There is none because we administer eye drops that numb the eye before beginning lens replacement. Additionally, patients may worry about recovery.
Cataract surgery recovery is typically very mild. Patients may be back to most of their normal activities within just a few days. For healing to reach its peak usually takes about 4 weeks. As each week passes, patients notice that their vision progressively improves.
Precautions after Cataract Removal
Every person may feel able to resume normal activities differently after cataract removal surgery. We suggest committing at least one to two days during which rest can be the primary objective. During the recovery period, a few precautions can be taken to protect the healing eye or eyes. These include:
- Avoid wearing makeup for one week after cataract removal.
- Use prescribed eye drops as instructed by your ophthalmologist.
- Manage light sensitivity by wearing sunglasses outdoors and lowering the lights indoors.
- Reduce the risk of irritation by minimizing exposure to wind and dust when possible.
- Do not press on or rub the eyes.
- Avoid saunas, hot tubs, and swimming pools for one week after surgery.
What Cataract Removal Surgery Recovery Feels Like
It is very uncommon for complications to arise after cataract removal surgery. Usually, the side effects of this procedure are mild to moderate in severity. As the eyes heal, patients may expect:
- Redness
- Itching
- Dry eyes
- Slight blurriness
- Aching behind or around the eyes
The sensations that occur after cataract removal usually decrease a little each day over a period of one to two weeks. After this time, the eyes may feel as good as new.
